Lonely Bay is a picturesque beach located near the township of Cooks Beach in the Whitianga region of New Zealand's Coromandel Peninsula. It is easily accessible from the nearby Shakespeare Cliff Lookout, a popular spot known for its spectacular views over the bay.

There is a small parking area at the top of the track and then it only takes around 5 minutes to get to the bottom and the beach!

The area is perfect for swimming and snorkeling, with crystal clear, blue waters and plenty of sand and shells to explore. You can also enjoy exploring the limestone rock formations along the shore, as well as shady woodland and pohutukawa trees (with bright red flowers during the summer months Dec- Jan) that make the beach even more stunning. There are no facilities available so you should bring your own food, drinks and equipment if planning to stay longer.

Lonely Bay is an idyllic getaway spot where you can find peace and tranquility away from the hustle and bustle of the Coromandel especially during summer.

For photography this spot would be beautiful during sunrise with the sun rising on the east and lighting up the beach. I have yet to be here during golden hours but it is just as stunning during the day. Take your wide angle (16-35mm) or mid range zoom (24-70m) with you for this one.
