The Te Paki Sand Dunes are just a half hour drive from Cape Reinga Lighthouse and are a must do stop on your Northland journey.
Also known as the Giant Sand Dunes, they are an outdoor adventure playground located on the Aupouri Peninsula of New Zealand. The magnificent and ever-changing dunes cover an area of 10 square kilometres (3.9 sq mi) and can rise up to an impressive 150m (490ft). Visitors of all ages and skill levels come to enjoy sandboarding and slides down the steep sandy ridges formed by the winds - a unique experience that is simply unforgettable!
Photography info: There is no specific place I would recommend to shoot on the Te Paki Sand Dunes as all the dunes are equally impressive! Leave your shoes at the car and walk barefoot over the dunes .. explore to your hearts content!
I photographed the dunes during golden hour and at sunset. I had explored the area earlier on in the day so had a bit of an idea of what was waiting for us. The golden light was beautiful at sunset and showed all the patterns and gradients of the sand.
