The Levada do Moinho / Levada Nova hike is a lesser-known but spectacular levada walk in Ponta do Sol on the south coast of Madeira. What makes it unique is that it combines two levadas in a single route, offering diverse landscapes, stunning valley views, and some thrilling sections.

The highlight of this hike is a dramatic waterfall section along Levada Nova, where the trail passes directly behind a cascading waterfall. This spot is a favorite among hikers for its sheer beauty and immersive experience. The contrast between the older Levada do Moinho and the more elevated, modern Levada Nova makes this loop especially interesting.

Why Isnā€™t It in the Official PR List?

Unlike PR-designated hikes, this trail is not officially maintained by Madeiraā€™s tourism board. It likely didnā€™t make the list because:

ā€¢ā  ā Some sections of Levada Nova have exposed drops with no railing, making it riskier than official PR routes.

ā€¢ā  ā While popular among experienced hikers, it is not promoted as a primary tourist hike.

ā€¢ā  ā Parts of the route are narrower and less regulated than PR trails, meaning maintenance is inconsistent.

Who Should and Shouldnā€™t Do This Hike?

āœ… Recommended for:

ā€¢ā  ā Hikers looking for an off-the-beaten-path levada with fewer crowds.

ā€¢ā  ā Those who enjoy variety in a hike, as this one transitions between two levadas.

ā€¢ā  ā People comfortable with mild exposure (sections with drop-offs).

ā€¢ā  ā Those who want to experience a waterfall walk-through.

āŒ Not recommended for:

ā€¢ā  ā People afraid of heights, as parts of Levada Nova have exposed edges.

ā€¢ā  ā Those uncomfortable with tunnel-like overhangs (some rock formations arch over the trail).

ā€¢ā  ā Children or inexperienced hikers due to the uneven and narrow parts of the path.

ā€¢ā  ā Anyone hiking in very wet conditions, as parts of the trail can become slippery.

Distance: ~9 km (loop)

Elevation Gain: ~350-400 m

Duration: ~2-3 hours

Difficulty: Easy

Trail Type: Loop (combining two levadas)

This hike is a fantastic alternative to the more crowded PR hikes, offering a raw and beautiful levada experience. Itā€™s scenic, peaceful, and rewarding, but hikers should exercise caution in certain areas. If youā€™re looking for a levada walk that combines waterfalls, tunnels, and incredible views while avoiding tourist-heavy trails, Levada do Moinho / Levada Nova is a great choice.
