Poça da Dona Beija, located in the village of Furnas on São Miguel Island in the Azores, has a fascinating history. Originally, it was a natural hot spring used by locals, with one of its most frequent visitors being a local priest who regularly bathed there. In 1988, with its growing popularity, the site was renovated and renamed after a beloved character from a Brazilian soap opera, Dona Beija. In 2005, further improvements were made to accommodate increasing visitors while preserving the natural environment.

Features

Poça da Dona Beija offers five thermal pools, each fed by natural hot springs with a consistent water temperature of about 39°C. The pools’ waters are rich in iron, giving them a distinct orange hue. The entire site is surrounded by lush vegetation, creating a tranquil and immersive natural setting. For visitors’ convenience, there are modern facilities, including changing rooms, showers, and relaxing rest areas.

Why Visit?

The mineral-rich waters of Poça da Dona Beija provide numerous health benefits, including muscle relaxation, improved circulation, and overall rejuvenation. The serene atmosphere and picturesque surroundings make it a perfect spot for relaxation and connecting with nature. Bathing under the open sky in warm, therapeutic waters is an unforgettable experience.

Opening Hours

The site is open daily from 8:30 AM to 11:00 PM, allowing visitors to enjoy the pools at any time of the day, whether it’s a peaceful morning soak, a midday retreat, or a magical evening under the stars.

Poça da Dona Beija is a must-visit destination for anyone seeking relaxation, natural beauty, and the therapeutic benefits of São Miguel’s famous thermal waters.
