Miradouro da Caveira is a viewpoint on the island of Flores in the Azores archipelago, named after an intriguing legend. According to the tale, a castaway named Demetrio, who had lived on the island for several years, was a non-believer and considered a heretic. After his death, a glowing skull began to appear at the site of the current viewpoint. The locals believed this was the soul of Demetrio, unable to find peace due to his heretical views. To help his soul, they started holding masses in his name until the apparition ceased. Thus, the viewpoint came to be known as "Miradouro da Caveira," which translates to "Skull Viewpoint."
While the legend adds a unique historical and cultural dimension to the place, the views from Miradouro da Caveira, in my opinion, are not particularly remarkable and cannot compete with other scenic spots on the island of Flores.
