Sightseeing
Cascata da Ribeira Quente, located on São Miguel Island in the Azores near the village of Ribeira Quente, is a picturesque waterfall approximately 20–25 meters in height. The name “Ribeira Quente” translates from Portuguese as “Hot Stream,” a reference to the region’s geothermal activity and natural hot springs, though the waterfall’s water itself is not hot.
Access and Route:
To reach the waterfall, visitors should follow the EN2-2A road between Furnas and Ribeira Quente. Parking is recommended just before the first tunnel if arriving from Furnas, with a short walk through the tunnel to the trail entrance, located roughly halfway through. The trail to the waterfall takes about 3–4 minutes, though it can be slippery and muddy, so caution is advised.
Seasonality:
The waterfall is at its fullest during the winter and spring months when rainfall increases, creating a more powerful and impressive flow.
Cascata da Ribeira Quente offers a beautiful natural experience, showcasing the unique landscapes and geothermal characteristics of São Miguel Island, making it a wonderful stop for those exploring the Azores.
