Porto das Salemas, located on the northern coast of Porto Santo, is a hidden gem renowned for its natural pools and stunning landscapes. This small cove, surrounded by rocky cliffs, features natural pools that form during low tide, offering crystal-clear waters perfect for swimming and relaxation.

To reach Porto das Salemas, visitors can follow a signposted detour from the ER111 road, leading to a parking area near the cliffs. The final 100 meters are unpaved, and while a 4WD vehicle can navigate closer, it’s advisable to park at the designated area due to the steep and uneven terrain. From there, a short but steep walk down a gravel path is required to access the pools. Proper footwear is recommended, and caution is advised as the descent can be slippery.

It’s best to visit during low tide when the pools are most accessible and vibrant. The area lacks facilities, so bringing water, sunscreen, and suitable footwear is essential. The rocks around the pools can be extremely slippery, so swimming or surfing shoes are advisable for a safer exploration.

Visiting Porto das Salemas offers a unique experience to enjoy the natural beauty of Porto Santo, away from the more frequented tourist spots. Whether you’re swimming in the turquoise waters, admiring the picturesque cliffs, or simply enjoying the tranquility, this hidden oasis is a must-visit for those exploring the island.
