Although this elevator is absolutely beautiful we don't recommend you to ride to the top in it,as the line is always excrutiatingly long. Instead, enjoy the structure from the outside and walk to the top along the shopping street of Chiado to access it for free and with no wait, if you wanna enjoy the view to the top. It's actually worth it. There is another elevator you can take free of charge with no waiting:
Directions:
-Walk past the Elevador de Santa Justa to Rua do Carmo. With the lift behind you, turn left and walk along the street.
Take the first right on to Rua Garrett.
Take the first right again on to Calçada do Sacramento. There will be a sign for Largo do Carmo.
At the top of this street you will see the Carmo Convent. Turn right along Travessa Dom Pedro de Menezes.
At the end of the Travessa you’ll see a restaurant called Bellalisa Elevador (it’s the only one there). - - -- Climb the steps to the left and walk through the outside terrace.
You can now cross the bridge over to the viewing platform.
You’ll still have to pay the €1,50 fee to access the viewing platform but everything else is free. Even from the bridge you can see some impressive views. To leave, just come back the exact same way.
