This huge riverfront square is one of the biggest in Lisbon. It is known to be one of the most famous spots in the city and with good reason.
The beautiful palace framing the square was refurbished after big parts of the original palace were destroyed in the disastrous earthquake and flooding in 1755. Today it is hard to even understand what a great job they did rebuilding the large palace.
The square offers many cafes and restaurants, but we don't recommend sitting in any of them as they are often overpriced and do not serve food of very good quality. If you insist stick to a beverage of choice, but expect tourist prices.
