This is about the wider Evrytania region and not just Karpenisi.
Evrytania is a mountainous region in the heart of the Pindos mountain range, blessed with incredibly rich nature, dramatic mountains, lakes, rivers, cliffs and valleys.
The main city is Karpenisi, that sits on the foot of Mt Velouchi. It's a proper town, not just a village. A short drive away is Evrytania's ski resort, Velouchi Ski Centre, on the heights of the mountain right above the town. Karpenisi is a good place to stay and explore if you wish to be central and close to everything.
I recommend staying at "Ta Tzakia" guesthouse and eating at "O Mylos". Find George at Mylos and say hi from me! The food is homemade and simply excellent. It's a family business and they make their own cheese and tsipouro.
Around Karpenisi and scattered all around Evrytania are 75 villages, all different from each other, looking at different views, each with a cute little square, churches, tavernas, friendly locals living the peaceful, slow but often hard life on the mountain. A few to name are: Mikro & Megalo Horio, Fidakia, Korishades, Voutiro, Klafsi, Granitsa, Vlaherna, Frangista.
Some of the things you should see and do in Evrytania are the monastery of Proussos, driving down the "Potamia" road, taking a break at Megalo Horio, see the Kremasta Lake from the village of Fidakia, take a lake boat tour at the Kremasta Lake, eat at the amazing tavernas of Mikro Horio and Gavros, go horse riding at the Saloon near Karpenisi, try the treks at Tornos, climb Mt Kaliakouda or Helidona, observe the tsipouro making traditions, try the local prosciutto at Stremmenos workshop in Tornos, try the local trout fish at Gavros.
