I bet you didn't think you could see an actual desert in Greece.
But yes, the sand dunes of Lemnos (also called "Pachies Ammoudies") is as close as you can get to a desert-like place in Greece. An ancient landscape of fine sand, surrounded by cedar and pine trees in the valleys around.
This is where it gets more interesting: the sand dunes aren't even that close to the sea (around 2,5km away), which suggests that the constant blowing of winds might have created this a long, long time ago.
You can access the sand dunes with a regular car and there is a designated parking lot with signs with information on the place.
Truly an extraordinary experience just standing on the sand barefoot and just soaking on the energy of the environment.
