In my opinion, the best way to see the island is by walking it. Most beaches and interest points are located on the south and eastern side of Pano Koufonissi: follow the trail that begins in Chora, all the way to Gala beach on the northeast.
There is only one trail and goes right next to the shore, so you can’t miss it. It should take you around an hour or two to reach Gala, with short stops on the way. Just make sure you have plenty of water and a hat with you since the sun can be quite strong, even though the sea breeze should definitely help.
The first beach you stumble upon on your way is the main beach in Chora: Ammos, which translates to “sand”. Indeed, this sandy beach with its incredible waters is the perfect welcoming to Koufonissia as it’s located close to where the ship sails from.
Then, you pass by the stunning beaches of Finikas with the taverna (also called Finikas) right on the beach (1km away from Chora), Fanos with the sandy shores (1,5km away from Chora), then there is popular Italida beach (named after an Italian woman), then there’s the natural swimming pool, the Devil’s Eye (even though it’s hidden so not easily spotted), then there is beautiful Pori beach (3,5km away from Chora), which is probably my favourite beach on the island.
Most people stop at Pori since it’s long and the waters are truly unreal. Also, there are two tavernas there: Kalofego and Wave. If you decide to continue on the trail, it will lead you to Gala, one of the most peculiar secluded beaches you have ever seen.
On your return, you have two options. Either take the same trail back to Chora or your hotel, or take the boat back to Chora or wherever you wish to go. There are three small boats that transport visitors and sail back and forth, from Chora port to Kato Koufonissi and all the way up to Pori beach from dawn till dusk.
Missed it? Just wait for the next one! You will not have to wait for more than 5-10 minutes until the next one comes. You can either get down at Chora port or ask the captain to drop you off wherever you wish, as long as there is a dock. Plus, there will be Greek islands music playing on the boat which makes the ride that much more enjoyable! The ticket costs 2,5 euros.
