The old town of Rethymno is a prototype of a city built during the Venetian era. It’s full of narrow alleys and one can literally see the influence of the past even via a short walk around the town. Byzantine, Venetian, Ottoman, Arab. The past is always present in Rethymnon.

Some of the spots in the old town that you should absolutely visit and see are:

  • The Fortezza Fortress

  • The Erofili theatre inside the walls of the fortress

  • The Venetian old port

  • The iconic lighthouse of the old port

  • The “Makri Steno” narrow alley

  • The Rimondi water source

  • The “Megali Porta” (large gate) arch

  • The “Loggia” entrance to the fortress

  • The “Neratze” mosque

  • The Paleontological Museum of Rethymnon

There are two ways to reach Rethymnon, either by ferry or airplane. There are everyday evening ferry rides that do Piraeus - Rethymnon. Alternatively, there are daily flights to/from the airports of Chania and Heraklion. The city of Rethymnon is right between those two, which means that you will need the same amount of time to reach either of the two airports from Rethymnon.
