Not only have you never heard of this place, but I bet you didn't think you could find places like this in the Peloponnese.
This is the lesser known side of the Peloponnese. When we think of Laconia, most people think of places like Limeni, Yerolimenas, Gythion, Areopolis, etc. These places are wonderful, make no mistake. But this really is something else!
Polydroso is a small, traditional village of only 3 (yes, three) permanent inhabitants, surrounded by impressively thick forests and hiking trails. Culturally, it belongs to the land of the Tsakones, an ancient Greek race that used to live in Arcadia, around Parnonas and the Arcadian coast. The Tsakones used to speak a language that is still being preserved to today. You won't hear it speaking, but the people try their best to revive it.
For accommodation, my best recommendation is Prytaneio. Prytaneio Guesthouse sits on top of Polydroso (or Tsintzina) village, on the heights of Mt Parnonas. Parnonas is a mountain in the regions of Arcadia and Laconia in the Peloponnese, stretching from the plains of Laconia to the coast of Arcadia, overlooking the Myrtoan Sea.
Prytaneio is one of the most quaint mountain guesthouses that I've had the chance to stay at. Stone and wood blend beautifully to create the a super cozy atmosphere, all the while being surrounded by huge fir and pine trees. The breakfast is simply amazing, with homemade jams, local eggs and pies.
As for food, I can think of two places with amazing food. The first one is Taverna Oinous (also called "Ta Orea Verria"), you should try the country-style sausage with orange. A typical Laconian dish! The second recommendation is taverna Koukounari, in Polydroso. Find mrs Aphrodite and ask her to prepare the yummiest dishes. Believe me when I say that this taverna is exceptionally good. Not just great. It's freaking exceptional.
Why visit Mt Parnonas ? Well, here are a few reasons:
- It's one of the quietest mountainous you'll visit, away from the crowds.
- the hiking trails are amazing, it's crazy to be surrounded by forests and feel the mountain breeze and the sea isn't even 30 minutes away from you
- The villages of Parnonas are exquisite (for example Polydroso as I mentioned, as well as Kosmas, and then Vamvakou, which is shipowner family's Niarchos place of origin).
- The area's attractions include the impressive monastery of Elona, built right on the edge of the cliff, as well as the ancient city of Geraki, with an amazing view to Mt Taygetos.
A short distance away from Kosmas is Leonidio, world famous for its climbing opportunities, as well as the beautiful seaside town of Tyros.
