Pangeo is a mountain of 1,956m located west of Kavala, close to the cities of Serres and Drama. It is associated with God Dionysus since the ancient times; it is believed that his sanctuary was located on the heights of the mountain. The surrounding areas were particularly wealthy in the antiquity due to the presence of gold mines on its foothills, as well as marble.

There are endless hiking trails and at least 3 mountain refuges, located in different areas of the mountain.

One of the prettiest and easiest treks of Pangeo starts at the village of Mesorropi. If you take a quick look at the map, you'll notice plenty of villages in the south and north sides of the mountain. They are all actually quite different from one another. The ones in the north belong to the region of Serres and those in the south are part of Kavala. Mesorropi (meaning: "a cut through the mountains" in Ancient Greek) is located at the south foot of Pangeo. Apparently, Alexander the Great had passed by, during his reign.
This small trek in the woods is very pretty and easy enough to be suitable for families. It takes you to a natural pool, starting from the village. It's simply called the Trail of Mesorropi. Ask the locals, they all know about it. This is an amazing pic-nic and swimming spot in the summer months.
