This village is a government-recognized traditional Rethymnon settlement with strong influences of Venetian architecture, hence the stone towers and Venetian-style buildings that are still preserved today in their original shape and form. They say that the Minoans might have lived there before, though.
The village took its name from Maroula, a woman shepherd who used to bring her animals to a water spring nearby. It is built on a hill overlooking the sea, only a 15-mins drive outside the city of Rethymno.
