NOTE: Due to storm damage in Aug 2024, the Brienzer Rothorn mountain train is closed until further notice. Current status.

The Brienzer Rothorn is tall mountain east of Interlaken, with spectacular views of Lake Brienz and the surrounding mountains.

You can easily reach the top with a vintage steam railway, taking about an hour to slowly climb the mountain. From the other side of the mountain, you can ride the Sörenberg cable car instead, which is slightly less expensive.

At the top, you'll find two restaurants with panorama terraces, a nice place to enjoy the view without much work. It's a short walk to a higher panorama viewpoint, where you can peer over the cliffs and see for miles in every direction.

Pro Tip: On Sundays in summer, you can do an early morning ride on the Sörenberg cable car and watch the sunrise at Brienzer Rothorn.

How to get there

The Brienzer Rothorn mountain train leaves from Brienz (Hauptstrasse 149, 3855 Brienz) and takes about 1 hour to reach the top. Brienz is a short train ride from Interlaken.

If you are coming from Lucerne, the Sörenberg cable car might be a little more convenient (and less expensive) – see on map.

Tickets

In 2024, a round trip ticket for the Brienzer Rothorn mountain train costs CHF 96/adult.

We highly recommend purchasing tickets in advance, to avoid long wait times and disappointment. When you buy online, they add a CHF 8 fee for a seat reservation.

This train is free with the Tell Pass and Berner Oberland Pass. But you should buy a seat reservation to secure your time slot.

50% discount with Swiss Travel Pass, SBB GA and Half-fare cards

Pro tip: you ride free on your birthday!
