Note: The Schilthorn cable car is being renovated and the section Birg to Piz Gloria (the top) is currently closed, scheduled to re-open in mid March 2025. In the meantime, you can still ride from Mürren to Birg for the Thrill Walk. Learn more.
The Schilthorn is a majestic summit in the Jungfrau Region, high above the alpine village Mürren. Positioned at an impressive 2,970m (9,740 feet), this alpine mountain overlooks the valley of Lauterbrunnen and provides some of the most stunning views of the region. It's famous for appearing in the in the 1969 James Bond movie "On Her Majesty's Secret Service".
You can reach this peak with a series of cable cars starting from Stechelberg in the Lauterbrunnen valley.
At the top, there is a panorama terrace and short stroll on the peak. Make sure to check the webcams before planning your visit.
As part of your visit, make sure to stop at the Birg middle station to experience the Thrill Walk with metal walkways built into the side of the mountain. Kids will love it.

This is an expensive attraction - CHF 108 round trip. But it's about half the price of the neighboring Jungfraujoch. I slightly prefer Jungfraujoch to Schilthorn because it has the ice cave and impressive glacier. But the higher price is a deal breaker for many.
If you are traveling on the Swiss Travel Pass (or SBB GA/ Saver Day Pass), the Schilthorn is discounted to CHF 42.80, making it a more reasonable option.
In any case, I wouldn't say the Schilthorn is a must-do. If you are visiting other tall mountain viewpoints during your trip, I'd probably choose other activities in this region.
Read our article about visiting Schilthorn.
*Note: In winter 2024, the Schilthorn cable car is being replaced. So this mountain will not be accessible from 14.10.2024 to 15.03.2025. *
In winter, there are ample skiing and snowboarding opportunities in the Schilthorn area, with 53 km of prepared slopes and 11 km of cross-country ski trails.
