This beautiful trail traverses the mountain from Grindelwald First to the Grosse Scheidegg mountain pass, where you can ride a bus back down to Grindelwald.

Trail: moderate • 2 hours one way • 7km • 234m up, 434 down (starting at First)
See trail map.

This area is full of marmots, which you are likely to see on the trail, if you are quiet and patient.

With kids, you can pick up an activity booklet for this trail at the First gondola station. At marmot info boards along the way, kids can answer questions and record the answers in the booklet.

How to get there

To reach this trail, go to the Grindelwald First gondola station (see on map) and ride up to the top (First).

Before hiking, enjoy the First Cliff Walk and Vantage viewpoint. Then follow signs for the Marmot trail (aka "Murmeltierweg"), direction Grosse Scheidegg.

The trail ends at the Grosse Scheidegg bus stop, where you will also find a restaurant at the Berghotel Grosse Scheidegg.

The Grindelwald Bus picks here about once an hour. See timetable.

Tickets

You'll need a one-way gondola ticket to the First station, which you can buy at the station. The gondola ride is free with the Jungfrau Travel Pass and Bernese Oberland Pass.

You'll also need a one-way ticket for the mountain bus from Grosse Scheidegg to Grindelwald. You can purchase this ticket on the SBB mobile app.

This bus is free with the Bernese Oberland Pass, but not covered by the Jungfrau Travel Pass.

Discount on both the gondola and bus with Swiss Travel Pass and Swiss Half Fare Card.
