La Maison du Gruyères is a cheese dairy in western Switzerland where they make Gruyère, the most popular cheese in Switzerland (not Emmental, which is the most popular Swiss cheese outside Switzerland).
At their small museum, you learn about cheese making and this important industry in Switzerland, which produces over 200,000 tons of cheese a year.
The main attraction is the cheese making, which you can watch through big glass windows. This happens only in the mornings, so check their cheese making schedule so you don't miss it.
The museum has an informative audio tour and videos that explain the cheese making process and history of cheese making in Switzerland. It's available in English and several other languages.
For kids, there are a couple activities to keep kids interested and a nice playground outside. But it's not as fun for kids as the Emmental dairy, if you are having trouble deciding.
At their restaurant, you can enjoy fondue made with Gruyère cheese as well as other cheesy dishes. Outside the restaurant, there is a very nice playground, so the kids can run around while you enjoy a leisurely meal.
Tip: We suggest combining the Gruyères cheese factory with a visit to the nearby Cailler Chocolate Factory and Gruyeres village and castle.
Location: Place de la Gare 3, 1663 Pringy-Gruyères • 1 min walk from Gruyères train station
Open: year round, daily from 9:00 - 18:00
