Kleine Scheidegg is a mountain pass between Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald, a transportation hub for the mountain railways that lead to the Jungfrauhoch glacier viewpoint.
Most people will use the mountain trains to get between Wengen and Kleine Scheidegg. But if you like to hike, you can skip the train and hike along the Via Alpina route, spending more time with the spectacular views of the Lauterbrunnen valley.
Trail info
Trail: moderate • 2h15 • 6.75km • 780m descent • trail map
Open: usually late June to mid October
Conditions: webcams • weather
Since the trail parallels the mountain train line, you can easily shorten the trail by simply catching the train at one of three intermediate stops before you get to Wengen.
We suggest this hike for those that want to stretch their legs after visiting the Jungfraujoch. Or for those who hiked the Panorama trail from Männlichen and want to keep hiking, especially if you are staying in Wengen.
How to get there
From Lauterbrunnen or Grindelwald Grund stations, ride the mountain train to Kleine Scheidegg, where the trail starts.
The hike ends in Wengen, where you can catch the mountain train to Lauterbrunnen, then a regular train to your final destinaton.
Cost
You'll need tickets for the mountain railways accessing the start and end of the trail. Best to purchase your tickets at the train station where you start your day. They charge a fee for buying tickets on the train.
These trains are free with the Jungfrau Travel Pass. Discounted with Swiss Travel Pass, Swiss Half Fare Card, Berner Oberland Pass and SBB GA.
