The most scenic way to travel between Lucerne and Interlaken/Jungfrau Region is on the Luzern-Interlaken Express train, which travels past gorgeous lakes and little villages and even over a mountain pass. The train cars have big windows to let in the view.

Luzern-Interlaken Express is a direct train between Lucerne and Interlaken. It leaves hourly in both directions. No transfers.

Travel time 1h50. Current schedule on SBB.ch

Tickets

In 2024, a one way ticket costs CHF 32/adult 2nd class full fare. Purchase on SBB.ch or SBB mobile app.

The train ticket is free with the Swiss Travel Pass.

Unlike other panorama trains, seat reservations are not required on this train and are not usually necessary. But if you prefer, you can book a seat reservation and/or train ticket here.

Where to sit

We prefer the right side of the train in either direction, as you get better views of the lakes. We often sit in the dining car so we can have a coffee during the ride.

Transfers to other cities

This train ends in Interlaken or Luzern. If you are not staying in these cities, you will need to transfer to a different train to your final destination.

If you are traveling to the Jungfrau Region, you would switch to a train that takes you either to Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen.

If you are in Interlaken and continuing to Montreux, you would transfer to the GoldenPass Express train, which requires a separate reservation.

When to ride

This train ride is easy to include in your itinerary, simply as your transfer from Lucerne to Interlaken or vice versa.

Since the ride is less than 2 hours, you could do this in the morning and arrive at the next destination by 10 or 11am. Then drop your luggage at your hotel or store in a luggage locker and have fun in the afternoon. In this case, check the closing times of the mountain lifts/attractions to make sure you have enough time for your hike, etc. Many close at 5pm in summer.

Alternatively, you could store your luggage in the morning (at the Lucerne or Interlaken station), have a full day outing. Then return to the train station around 4-5pm, pick up your luggage, and ride the train in the early evening. In this case, you should be at your next destination by 6-7pm
