Hotel Obersteinberg is a rustic mountain hotel located on a mountain at the end of the Lauterbrunnen valley. You can only reach the hotel by hiking there, so it has a quiet, remote atmosphere.

Open: end of May to end of September.

We usually stop here for lunch or afternoon drinks while doing the Tanzbödeli hike from Gimmelwald. The restaurant serves traditional mountain food like sausages, potatoes, and soup. Pay in cash.

Hotel

The hotel has dormitory-style rooms and private rooms for two. The toilets are in a separate building; you have to walk outside to access them. No showers.

The hotel only has limited solar-powered electricity for the kitchen. So rooms are lit by candlelight and gas lamps. No outlets to charge your devices.

You can only reserve by phone +41 33 855 20 33, starting from the beginning of May. This hotel is very popular and small, so book way ahead.

How to get there

The most direct way to reach the hotel is hiking up from Stechelberg at the far end of the Lauterbrunnen valley.

Bus stop: Stechelberg, Hotel, about 20 mins from Lauterbrunnen train station.
Parking: Metered multi-day parking next to the bus stop - see on map.

From Stechelberg, there are multiple trails leading to Obersteinberg. My trail map shows a loop, so you can take one trail up to the hut and another one down.

It takes about 2.5 - 3 hours, gaining about 850m elevation over about 5.4 km (3.4 mi).

Many people also reach this hut via the Tanzbödeli hike starting in Gimmelwald. In this case, you reach the hotel after about 3h of hiking.
