The Grindelwald First Trottibike ride is like riding a kick scooter/bike combo downhill on a special off-road track.
Requirements: minimum height 125cm (4'1''), smaller bike for kids
Open: usually late April through mid October. Check status.
The route is 5km, descending 566m of elevation. See route map. It usually takes about 30 mins depending on how fast you go.
You start by riding a gondola up the mountain. You pick up your sturdy kick scooter with big wheels, hand brakes, a wide footboard, and suspension for a smooth ride even on bumpy surfaces.
Then follow the designated path down the mountain, with awesome views of the Grindelwald valley and surrounding peaks during the whole ride.
Note: During summer season and weekends, there can be long waits of 1 hour+ for this ride. Also, tickets can sell out so best to buy them online at least the day before. The Trottibikes are the least popular activity, so they usually have the shortest wait time and last ticket to sell out.
The Trottibike is fairly easy to control. But it has some steep sections, so best for those with good balance and hand strength who like speed and adventure. We think it's great for families or anyone up for a thrilling ride!
We typically combine this short activity with other fun things on this same mountain, including the First Cliff Walk, hike to Bachalpsee lake, and more of the adventure amusements like the First Flyer zip line.
To reach the scooters, you ride a gondola from the Grindelwald village. The First gondola is located at Dorfstrasse 187, 3818 Grindelwald.
From the Grindelwald train station (not Grindelwald Terminal), its a 10 mins walk through the village. Or you can ride bus 123 to the Grindelwald, Firstbahn stop.
Ride the gondola up to the mountain. For the scooters, get off at the "Bort" stop. You pick up the scooters here and ride down to Grindelwald, returning the scooter at the First gondola station.
If you want to visit the First Cliff Walk, ride up to the "First" gondola station, the last stop. Later ride back down to "Bort" for the scooter ride.
You pay a fee to ride the gondola and an extra fee to do the mountain cart. You should buy your Trottibike Scooter tickets online at least one day in advance. They do sell out. No refunds.
You cannot reserve a particular time slot. It's first come, first served.
For the gondola, you can also buy those tickets online, as well as onsite at machines and ticket office. The gondola is free with the Jungfrau Travel Pass and Bernese Oberland Pass. Discounted with Swiss Travel Pass, Swiss Half Card and GA.
They also offer an Adventure Package, which includes the gondola ticket and 1 or 2 of the amusements (First Flyer, First Glider, Go-Carts, or Trotti scooters). If you want to do more than 2 amusements, you can purchase them separately.
Warning: with the long wait times, you may not have time to do more than 1 amusement. During high season, we suggest planning to do only one amusement.
The Trottibike scooters are usually open late April through mid October. It may close due to poor weather or snow on the trail.
During this season, it's open daily from 9.00 - 18:00. First come, first served, no reservations. On busy days, we recommend doing this activity in the morning to avoid disappointment.
Before doing the Trottibike, definitely visit the First Cliff Walk (no extra fee). You could also do a hike to the the Bachalpsee lake, which starts and ends at the First gondola station.
You could add-on the other amusements like the Glider, Flyer, or Mountain Carts. But because of the long wait times, it's usually not practical to do more than two.
