Stechelberg is a small village near the end of the Lauterbrunnen valley. From here, you can ride a series of cable cars to the alpine villages Gimmelwald and Mürren, then to the Schilthorn summit.

💡Tip: Unlike most cable cars at close around 17:30, the cable cars from Stechelberg to Mürren run quite late in the evening. This means you can stay late in Mürren, enjoying the sunset and dinner in the village and still return to your hotel in the valley.

Tickets

The ticket you buy depends on where you want to go. Most day trippers will need a round trip ticket to either Mürren or Schilthorn. See current prices.

The cable cars to Gimmelwald and Mürren are relatively affordable and are free with the Swiss Travel Pass, Berner Oberland Pass, SBB GA, and SBB Day Passes.

The cable car section from Mürren to Schilthorn is much more expensive. That section is discounted with Swiss Travel Pass and other travel cards.

How to get there

By public transport: From the Lauterbrunnen train station, a bus runs every 30 mins to the Stechelberg (Schilthornbahn) stop, a 14 min journey.

By car: There is a large metered parking lot next to the Stechelberg cable car station. Just put Stechelberg into your GPS and you can't miss it.

Note: In 2024-5, these cable cars are being replaced. In Nov 2024, there should be a direct cable car from Stechelberg to Mürren, without the need to stop in Gimmelwald. Learn more.
