This beautiful lake near Lucerne is surrounded by tall mountains and green hills speckled with chalets and cows.
There is an easy trail around the lake, a good choice anytime but particularly in spring, when higher elevation trails are covered in snow.
Full loop: Easy • 2h30 • 9.5 km loop • 140 m up/down • see trail map
Since there is public transportation on both ends of the lake, you can easily just walk half the trail instead of the full loop.
How to get there
By car: Parking at Loppstrasse, 6078 Lungern (south end) or near Kaiserstuhl OW train station (north end).
By public transport: Easiest to start at the Kaiserstuhl OW train station. The trail starts just across the street.
If you want to only hike half of the trail, walk along the east lakeshore and end at the Lungern train station.
What to do
We suggest the short detour to the two waterfalls near the south end of the lake. The little island on the east shore is a nice place for a picnic. In summer, you can camp next to the lake and swim at the "badi" with a big waterslide.
Where to eat: There are lots of picnic areas with fire pits along the way. There are also restaurants on both ends of the lake. We usually eat at Restaurant Kaiserstuhl, which serves local fish from from the lake.
