Stanserhorn is a tall mountain peak near Lucerne, offering a spectacular view of lakes, alpine meadows, and mountains in every direction. To reach the top at 1850 m, you ride a vintage open-air funicular train. Then a special cable car, where you can stand on the open-air roof while you ride up, a thrilling experience.

Location: Stans, about 25mins by train from Lucerne

Open: usually mid April through mid Nov - check opening times

At the top, you'll find a restaurant with a big outdoor terrace. There is also a nice picnic area with grill pits, a bit unusual on mountain peaks but very welcome.

There's a short walking path around the peak, visiting different viewpoints, about 30-40 min walk. It's a relatively easy walk with a wide path and railing to the side. It has some some stairs to reach the observation deck at the highest point.

How to get there

The funicular is located Stansstaderstrasse 19, 6370 Stans near the Stans train station. Lots of metered parking nearby.

You'll need a return ticket that includes the funicular and cable car. Since it's a popular tourist destination for groups, so you should book seat reservation a couple days before to avoid a long wait.

If you have the Swiss Travel Pass and Tell Pass, you should definitely visit Stanserhorn since its mountain transport is free with those passes. But you still need to book a seat reservation ahead of time.
