⚠️⚠️⚠️Please note that this mountain trail is dangerous, often with very steep slopes to one side of the trail. Just in summer 2022, there were 5 deaths on this trail, including children. If you are a less experienced hiker and/or hiking with children, we strongly advise you to use the safer trail that leads up from Wasserauen.
To access this trail, you start by riding the Ebenalp cable car up the mountain. You'll need a one-way ticket.
By train: Wasserauen, Bahnhof station, about 25 min from Appenzell.
By car: Park at the large metered lots next to the Ebenalp cable car - Schwendetalstrasse 82, 9057 Wasserauen. Pay by coin or parking app.
From the cable car station, hike down to the Aescher cliff restaurant, about 25 mins.
Continue past the restaurant and fork left on the trail labeled Seealpsee. The first 20 mins of this trail have sections with steep drops to the side and cable handrails on the mountain side. Be careful!
After about an hour of steep descent in the forest, you reach the service road. Continue right on the road, following signs to Seealpsee. You reach the lake in about 15 mins.
At the lake, you'll find restaurants and easy path around the lake, about 30 min around. Learn more.
To return to Wasserauen, you can walk down on the service road or follow the mountain trail as indicated in my trail map. About 1h15 to get down the mountain.
