As implied by the date in the name, this traditional cafe is “OG” Zürich café, started in 1842 in a building from the 13th century. It used to be called Café Schober, which is still the name referenced in many guidebooks and online articles.
They have rooms on multiple floors with a variety of décor, giving each a different vibe. If you come on the weekend, you may have to wait awhile for table. They have a few outdoor tables, with blankets in winter, so you can watch the world go by.
We often take visitors here to experience that old world feel. We always order hot chocolate with whipped cream, though some may find it not quite as sweet as they are used to. My favorite treat is their lemon tart, though not always available. At the entrance, there is a counter selling chocolate, pastries and other confections to takeaway.
