Sunnegga is a mountain area above Zermatt, with a pretty lake, big playground, and picnic area. It's completely designed for families, a great place to relax and play with Matterhorn views.
When to go: mid June through early October
Current conditions: www.zermatt.ch • weather • webcam
We typically visit the Sunnegga playground after doing a hike in this area. We like the Zermatt Flower Trail and Riffelalp 3 Lake Trail, both of which end at Sunnegga. But the 5 Lake Walk (11km) and short Marmot theme trail for kids are also popular choices.
With older kids, you may want to ride the "Trotti" scooters down the mountain instead of the funicular. You can rent the scooters and helmets at the Sunnegga funicular station. My boys love that ride, a fun treat at the end of the day.
The Sunnegga funicular train is located at Vispastrasse 34, 3920 Zermatt, a 5 min walk from the main Zermatt train station.
If you plan to ride the mountain scooter down to Zermatt, you only need a one way ticket. If you plan to hike, you'll also need a ticket for the Blauherd gondola to reach those trails.
A return ticket from Zermatt to Sunnegga . It's free for kids under 9.
You get a 50% discount with discount with Swiss Travel Pass and Swiss Half Fare Card. Children under 9 ride free with a parent. Children 9-15 are 50%. Dogs ride free.
All mountain railways on the Sunnegga mountain are included in the Zermatt Peak Pass.
