The Gornergrat Railway is one of the most magnificent rides in the Swiss Alps. Operating since 1898, this mountain rack railway is a 10km track that originates from the popular tourist destination of Zermatt and ascends 1469m up to the summit of Gornergrat at 3089m above sea level. It is believed to be Europe's highest open-air railway and has become popular amongst avid skiers and hikers. Along the route you can see breathtaking views of 29 peaks over 4000m, several glaciers, and on a clear day, the famous Matterhorn.
