Milan’s coat of arms is an emblem of a ‘biscione’ translating to a ‘large grass snake’ (also known as the Vipera). Some sources say it depicts the act of devouring a man, whilst others say it is giving birth to a child... The symbol is entrenched in the history of Milan and is linked to the powerful noble families of Sforza and Visconti which reigned over Milan during the Middle Ages.
Situated on the street to the south side of the Duomo you will discover a wonderful example of the national coat of arms on the façade of the palace opposite the cathedral. The symbol has now become an iconic motif for Milan and is used by various companies and media channels.
