The Athabasca Glacier Trail in Jasper National Park offers a rare chance to walk up to the edge of one of the most accessible glaciers in North America. This short 1.4-kilometre trail leads from the Columbia Icefield Discovery Centre across rocky terrain shaped by centuries of glacial retreat, with markers showing how much the glacier has receded over time.

While the trail is relatively easy, the high elevation and harsh, wind-swept landscape add to the adventure. At the end, hikers are rewarded with a breathtaking view of the massive glacier, though venturing onto the ice itself is dangerous without a guided tour.

For anyone driving the Icefields Parkway, this trail is a must-do, offering an up-close encounter with one of the Rockies’ most awe-inspiring natural wonders. It's a great alternative to the paid experiences on the glacier such as the Glacier Adventure or Ice Walk. However, we do not recommend anyone venture onto the glacier or around the ropes on their own.
