This trail has it all, making it a unique and surprising experience. It takes you from a levada to the sea and then back to the mountains, all along extraordinary paths.
The hike begins near the old tunnel that connects Machico with Caniçal, specifically along a section of Levada do Caniçal. The trail is mostly flat and offers stunning views of Caniçal, a charming fishing village known for its history in the whaling industry until 1982.
The levada trail eventually descends to the village center. Continue following the levada to its end, then proceed along the road. This is your chance to experience the traditions and daily life of the locals.
Once you reach the village center, take a break to rest and recharge before walking along the seaside promenade next to Praia de Natal. At the end of this promenade, you’ll begin the ascent toward Pico do Facho.
The path becomes more uneven as you climb. Don't forget to pause now and then to appreciate the extraordinary views, which not only include the village but also the levada and the valley.
Once you reach Pico do Facho, you can choose to visit the viewpoint or descend to the end of the hike, just after the old tunnel where it all started.
