The "casinhas de Santana" are famous both in Portugal and beyond for their unique and charming design. With their triangular shape and thatched roofs, these houses have become the symbol of Santana, a town on the north coast of Madeira.
These traditional houses reflect the town's past isolation, as it was once hard to reach by land or sea. Because of this, Santana has preserved many cultural traditions that are now an important part of its heritage. Today, around 8,800 people live in this 96.2 km² area, which includes six parishes: Arco de São Jorge, Faial, Ilha, Santana, São Jorge, and São Roque do Faial.
Visitors to Santana can explore attractions like the Madeira Theme Park, the Rocha do Navio Natural Reserve, and Pico Ruivo, the highest mountain in Madeira.
In 2011, Santana was named a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, making it a perfect spot to experience beautifully preserved nature. You can enjoy over 120 km of hiking trails that take you through the heart of this special place.
