Fuya Fuya is an exciting and stunning volcanic complex located in the Western Cordillera of the Andes in northern Ecuador, only 85km from Quito. This destination is home to three magnificent turquoise crater lakes at its summit caldera, which were created by the explosive Plinian Eruption that marked the end of its activity 200,000 years ago. Ascending the two volcanoes offers breathtaking views of the paramo grasslands and shrublands of Mojanda, and is well worth the challenge! Climbing up some sections may require a low-grade technical ascent, such as class 3 or 4 scrambling, but anyone in good physical condition can conquer this extraordinary mountain. Lastly, it is possible to camp around Mojanda and can be reached by taking buses from Quito to Tabacundo or Otavalo, then hiring trucks and taxis to arrive at the trailhead.
