The Sólheimasandur plane wreck has become one of Iceland's most iconic attractions in South Iceland. Located on a vast black sand beach, making it feel like you're in a desert or on a different planet. There are tours that take you there in vehicles but I always recommend the walk which is around 3.5 km (2.2 miles) and takes around 1.5 hours (in total, both ways). It can get quite crowded out there, so if you want the place in some solitude, you're best bet is going to be with the midnight sun during summer time! I urge you not to climb on or damage the wreck in any ways to make sure it lasts as long as possible. And also be aware, people have got lost walking there in thick fog and snow storms so be careful and only attempt it in good weather. As the plane cannot be seen from the road, remember to bring your GPS coordinates (63°27'32.7"N 19°21'52.9"W).
The backstory: A US Navy Douglas C-117 crashed on the frozen beach near Sólheimasandur in November 1973 after running out of fuel during a storm, with all five crew members miraculously surviving without injury. I remember reading somewhere that it was later discovered that they had switched to the wrong fuel tank and actually had plenty in reserve. But a local farmer made sure nothing went to waste sometime later. For years, the empty wreckage served as a storage and target practice spot for locals until it became a popular tourist site.
