THE black sand beach of Iceland probably needs no introduction. The Reynisfjara Beach has become one of the most iconic attractions in all of Iceland. Located on the south coast, close to the ring road, it's very easy to access and even has a restaurant/cafe right by the parking lot. To me, the trickiest part about getting the most out of this place is being there without all the big crowds. A few tricks to increase your chances are to be there super early or super late (during summer, when the sun almost doesn't set), going there when there's a big storm (watch out for the waves!) or simply staying for a bit longer and see how the crowds come and go with the scheduling of the tour buses. If you find yourself there on a very busy day, I'd suggest walking along the cliffs to the east (towards the sea stacks). There are usually way fewer people there BUT be aware of the tides and don't get trapped!

WARNING: Be very careful of the ocean there. Even if you've spent some time there and you think the waves aren't that big, don't go very close to the ocean - ESPECIALLY NOT WITH CHILDREN. There are notorious sneaker waves that have killed many tourists there.

QUICK NOTES:

  • What it is: The most famous black sand beach in the world.

  • Best season: Any

  • Best time of day: Afternoon / sunset (tends to be in the shade in the early morning)

  • Nice to know / WARNING: Be very careful of the ocean there. Even if you've spent some time there and you think the waves aren't that big, don't go very close to the ocean - ESPECIALLY NOT WITH CHILDREN. There are notorious sneaker waves that have killed many tourists there. And now on to a more positive note! When you're there, make sure you check out the basalt columns and the small cave if the tide allows. And if the tide is low, you can walk even further along the rocks towards the sea stacks for some different types of views (and you'll get away from the big crowds). But always be aware of the ocean!
