Þakgil is a hidden gem in south Iceland, nestled in a flat valley surrounded by rugged mountains with a velvet green veneer. The landscape is reminiscent of Thorsmörk and offers perfect shelter from the pesky Icelandic wind. With a cave for dining, barbecues outside, and stunning hiking routes near the formidable volcano Katla, Þakgil is a cozy and magical spot to unwind and connect with nature. Don't miss the waterfall up the gully to the far right—it's a real gem.
QUICK NOTES:
What it is: A lush canyon, hidden on the south coast.
Best season: Summer.
Best time of day: Any.
Nice to know: The road there can be quite gnarly but I've seen pretty small cars make it there but I'd always prefer a 4x4 with some ground clearance. There are loads of epic hikes from the canyon which I highly recommend!
