Hraunhafnartangi is a unique area of Iceland, located at the edge of the Arctic circle and is the northernmost mainland point of Iceland, with the main attraction being the lighthouse. With a lot of driftwood, old ruins and almost no signs of modern life, you can really feel like you went back in time at Hraunhafnartangi. There's even an ancient artifacts named Þorgeirsdys which is thought to be the burial ground of a long-ago slain warrior, Þorgeirs Hávarssonar, who was slain in an heroic battle in the 11th century. Moreover, you might have the opportunity to spot the rare Eider Duck from around April 15th to July 14th, a species protected by Icelandic law. To get there you simply park your car on the parking spot by the beach and walk along the ocean until you reach it.

QUICK NOTES:

  • What it is: A unique area at the northeastern edge of Iceland full of driftwood, old ruins and an ancient artifact and a beautiful lighthouse.

  • Best season: Any.

  • Best time of day: Any.

  • Nice to know: The Kría (Arctic tern) can be quite aggressive but don't worry, just hold a stick above your head and you'll be fine!
