Message from Thrainn Kolbeinsson

This is probably one of my favourite pools in Iceland, especially with kids. It's officially called Jónasarlaug in honour of Jónas Hallgrímsson (an Icelandic poet, author and naturalist) and was build between 1943 – 1945 by the youth organisations in the area. It has got two hot tubs, a nice swimming pool, water slide, a sauna and more.

Swimming pools are an integral part of Icelandic culture and has been ever since people started gathering in natural hot springs in the past. It's where people meet an talk about everything from the weather to politics. Entering one of those pools is really the easiest way to immerse yourself in the local culture.

PS. They're almost all geothermally heated!

QUICK NOTES:

  • What it is: A fun swimming pool in Þelamörk, North Iceland (not far from Akureyri).

  • Best season: Any! But opening hours might be limited during winter.

  • Opening hours: Please check the website.

  • Nice to know: Usually you can rent swim wear and a towel at the swimming pool. In most pools in Iceland, admission is FREE for kids and senior visitors (67+).
