Háleyjarbunga is a small, flat lava shield with a 20 to 25 meter deep crater close to the ocean on the tip of Reykjanes. The shield is at least 9,000 years old and was formed during a highly effusive eruption. It's located close to Reykjanes lighthouse, and a hiking path is marked form Gunnuhver over the lavafield to the crater. Just another evidence of the volcanic history of the Reykjanes peninsula!
QUICK NOTES:
What it is: A lesser-known volcanic crater on the Reykjanes peninsula.
Best season: Any (but can be harder to visit on snowy days)
Best time of day: Any.
Nice to know: A hiking path is marked from Gunnuhver and should be around 3,6km / 2,2 miles, there and back.
