Landmannalaugar is an area of Iceland renowned for its stunning colored rhyolite mountains and geothermal hot springs. It's located in the Fjallabak Nature Reserve in the highlands and has become a haven for adventure seekers and hikers from all over the world. You will need a capable 4x4 to get here but it's definitely worth it. I would personally spend at least 2 days here and even longer if you want to venture further into the highlands in guided tours. The hiking options are endless but I'd definitely recommend Bláhnúkur and Brennisteinsalda hikes!

QUICK NOTES:

  • What it is: An incredible area in the highlands of Iceland, known for its rhyolite mountains and geothermal hot springs.

  • Best season: Summer.

  • Best time of day: Any (but sunset/sunrise for the best light of course).

  • Nice to know: You will need a capable 4x4 to get there (river crossings too). The area is very vast and the hiking options are endless. There is great information in the area about the available hikes so I definitely recommend spending at least a full day or even better 2-3 in Landmannalaugar. I think Bláhnúkur and Brennisteinsalda are two of the most popular ones but it's also the starting point of the legendary Laugavegur Trail.
