Definitely a must-stop when you're driving along the South Coast. Dyrhólaey is an impressive volcanic arch, standing 120m high, and welcomes visitors from a spectacular viewpoint above the sea. Dyrhólaey is divided into two parts, one goes higher and offers great views over the black sand beach to the west, the other is lower and offers views to the black sand beach in the east (all the way to Reynisdrangar rock stacks). During the summer months, you can see puffins on both sides but you can get much closer on the lower part.

QUICK NOTES:

  • What it is: An island connected to the mainland on the South Coast.

  • Best season: Any.

  • Best time of day: Any - but sunrise/sunset is always beautiful there.

  • Nice to know: There are two parking lots, upper and lower - it's easy to check out both.
