Witness the aftermath of the 2021 eruption in Reykjanes. Even though it has completely died down, if you're interested in geology and volcanoes it can still be very a special and unique spot to visit. The craters that formed are enormous and the lava fields that formed are so vast. Definitely worth a few hours if you have the time and energy!

HOW TO GET THERE: There are two main options to see this one:,

  • A. Starting at Geldingadalir Parking P1 you simply follow the trail (Path A). It is about 4km one way, but sets you on course for the 2022 and 2023 one too if you have some extra time.

  • B: Starting at Volcano Skali Parking P2 you then follow the trail (Path C) onto a ridge called Langihryggur. The hike is around 4km one way and from there you'll be able to see the vast lava field with the craters in the distance. You also have the option to keep going to the top of Stóri-Hrútur (a small cone shaped mountain) for even better views. From there you'll be able to see lava from the 2021, 2022 and 2023 eruption

NOTE: These are long and quite difficult hikes and the weather in Reykjanes can be harsh so prepare well and check the weather before leaving.

For more hiking options and information I recommend this site.

QUICK NOTES:

  • What it is: The eruption site from the eruption of July 2021.

  • Best season: Summer (the rest of the year too but it's quite a hike so make sure you're well equipped and check the weather forecast before you go).

  • Best time of day: Afternoon and sunset are my favourite.

  • Nice to know: Due to the regular seismic activity and previous eruptions in the area, make sure the roads are open and area is safe before you leave (https://safetravel.is/ & https://umferdin.is/en/region/southwest).
