Urðaviti is a lighthouse in the Westman Islands with an interesting story at an incredible location. First build in 1925 but went under lava in the 1973 eruption. Later it was rebuilt on top of the new lava but since then the lighthouse has collapsed twice and the one that's there now was built in 1986. There is considerable erosion along the coast and therefore it has been built so that it can be moved inwards as the coastline becomes further eroded. The views from the area is great, overlooking a few of the islands surrounding the Westman Islands.

QUICK NOTES:

  • What it is: An interesting lighthouse in a cool spot in the Westman Islands.

  • Best season: Any but it can be hard/impossible to reach in heavy snow during winter.

  • Best time of day: Any but sunset/sunrise will look incredible.

  • Nice to know: The views from there, overlooking the islands to the north-east is incredible.
