I combined these two places in one since I only have this picture of them (shot during a fishing trip with friends). Close to Landmannalaugar, driving the F208 in the highlands, you'll drive right past Lake Frostastaðavatn and the Strútur crater. There is a nice view over the lake from the road but you can also park your car there and walk along the southern edge of the lake. Just around the bend there is the crater, Strútur, which you can easily hike to the top of for a quick little walk.

• What it is: A big lake and a volcanic crater in the highlands.

• Best season: Summer.

• Best time of day: Any (but sunrise and sunset for the best light).

• Nice to know: You'll need a capable 4x4 to reach this spot. To get an overview like in the image you need a drone.
