We honestly didn’t know what to expect from the Agafay Desert. It’s not your typical desert with towering sand dunes—instead, it’s this rocky, moon-like landscape just 40 minutes from Marrakech. But as soon as we arrived, we knew we were somewhere special.
We stayed overnight in one of the desert camps, and that experience alone made the trip worth it. The stillness, the open views, and the way the golden light hit the hills at sunset—it was all so calming. The highlight? A traditional Berber dinner under the stars. The food was delicious, the music was soft and soulful, and the atmosphere felt incredibly authentic. It was one of those slow, grounding evenings that stick with you long after.
Even though we didn’t try them ourselves, there are quite a few activities you can add to your Agafay visit if you're feeling adventurous. Camel rides at sunset are super popular and offer that classic desert experience (with great photo ops, too). For something with a little more thrill, many camps offer quad biking tours across the rocky trails. Some even have stargazing setups or yoga sessions in the early morning—perfect if you're into slower travel like us.
Agafay is great for all types of travelers—whether you’re coming with kids, your partner, or even solo. It’s an easy add-on to your Marrakech itinerary, works in any season, and doesn’t require a ton of planning.
If you’re craving a quieter side of Morocco, this desert delivers. It may not be the Sahara, but it has a magic all its own.
