Carlowrie Castle is an impressive 19th century Scottish Baronial castle located on the outskirts of Kirkliston, close to Edinburgh.

While the castle isn't open to the public (unless you are there for an event like a wedding) it's a favourite of ours to visit and admire from the outside in Autumn when the Ivy turns red!

Some history:

It was designed and built by renowned architect David Rhind in 1852-1855 for the Hutchison family, a local wine merchant with long-standing connections in the area. The castle cost a large fortune at the time - £33,000 - but the rarity of its design and its sheer beauty are something to behold. Later, the house passed to Thomas Hutchison's eldest son, who then left it to his granddaughters Isobel Wylie Hutchison, who lived at Carlowrie Castle until her death in 1982.
