The challenges of Driving in Lofoten Island in winter and some safety tips to consider.
The best way to explore the Lofoten Islands is by renting a car. Having your own vehicle provides the flexibility to travel at your own pace and access remote, scenic locations that are often difficult to reach via public transportation. Driving in Lofoten also allows you to stop whenever you like to soak in the breathtaking views, embark on spontaneous hikes, and visit charming fishing villages along the way. The roads in Lofoten are well-maintained, and driving is relatively straightforward, making it a convenient and enjoyable way to experience the stunning landscapes of the islands. Renting a car also gives you the freedom to travel between islands and discover hidden gems off the beaten path.
Public transportation in Lofoten is not well connected and is often subject to last-minute cancellations. Taxis are available but tend to be quite expensive.
You can rent a car online through companies like Avis, Europcar, or Sixt. However, my absolute favorite car rental company is Lofoten Rental Car, located in Svolvær. They offer affordable prices and reliable vehicles, making them an excellent choice for your trip. Check them out!
If you're visiting in the winter, don’t worry about driving. The speed limit never exceeds 90 km/h, and roads are closed during extreme weather conditions. You can always check current road conditions on this website:

Be mindful of certain bridges that may close due to strong winds or bad weather. It’s essential to check road updates before starting your adventure.
Cars are equipped with winter tires to prevent slipping. Avoid speeding and never drive off-road. Look for the red markers along the roadside—these indicate the edge of the road in snowy conditions. NEVER drive past these markers, as doing so could leave you stuck and in need of roadside assistance.
